Peter was born in 1837 in Ringley and his baptism took place on February 7th, 1837 at St. Saviour (Ringley).1 2  Peter's father was Thomas Benyon and his mother was Mary Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were Mathew Haslam and Charlotte Haslam. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William, Robert, Joseph, Charlotte, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
