Charlotte was born in 1839 in Clifton and her baptism took place at St. Saviour (Ringley).1  Charlotte's father was Thomas Benyon and her mother was Mary Haslam.  Her maternal grandparents were Mathew Haslam and Charlotte Haslam. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Peter, John, William, Robert, Joseph, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
