William was born in December 1844 in Kearsley.1  William's father was Thomas Benyon and his mother was Mary Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were Mathew Haslam and Charlotte Haslam. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Peter, John, Robert, Joseph, Charlotte, Ann, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
