Thomas' father was Edward Bennett and his mother was Elizabeth Hughes. His paternal grandparents were Edward Bennett and Mary Hughes. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, Edward, John, Humphrey, Benjamin, Benjamin, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the youngest of the nine children.
