Ellis was born in April 1894. Ellis' father was William Thomas Bennett and her mother was Elizabeth Jane Silby. Her paternal grandparents were Cap John Bennett and Jane Roberts. She had six brothers and four sisters, named John, Jonathan, Benjamin, Clifton, Carl, William, Mary, Jettie, Emma and Thora. She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
