Clifton was born in February 1898. Clifton's father was William Thomas Bennett and his mother was Elizabeth Jane Silby. His paternal grandparents were Cap John Bennett and Jane Roberts. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, Jonathan, Benjamin, Carl, William, Mary, Jettie, Ellis, Emma and Thora. He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
