Thomas was born in 1773 in Hanmer and his baptism took place there on May 29th, 1773.1  Thomas' father was John Batterbury and his mother was Elizabeth Kempster. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, George, Robert, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
