John was born in 1768 in Hanmer and his baptism took place there on September 11th, 1768.1  John's father was John Batterbury and his mother was Elizabeth Kempster. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, George, Robert, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Ann.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
