Robert was born in 1778 in Hanmer and his baptism took place there on January 3rd, 1778.1  Robert's father was John Batterbury and his mother was Elizabeth Kempster. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Thomas, George, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Ann.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
