Sarah's father was George Batho and her mother was Martha Cartwright. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, George, Henry, Charles, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, Eliza, Martha and Jane.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.

‌Sarah and William were married in a religious ceremony in December 1838 in Malpas.²
