Martha's father was George Batho and her mother was Martha Cartwright. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, George, Henry, Charles, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, Sarah, Eliza and Jane.  She was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.

‌Martha and James were married in a religious ceremony in 1844 in Malpas.²
