Thomas was born in March 1866 in Birkenhead.1  Thomas' father was William Ashton and his mother was Elizabeth Eddowes.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Eddowes and Martha Jones. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Charles, Arthur, Harry, Amy and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
