Charles was born in December 1872 in Birkenhead.1  Charles' father was William Ashton and his mother was Elizabeth Eddowes.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Eddowes and Martha Jones. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Arthur, Harry, Amy and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
