Amy was born in September 1870 in Birkenhead.1  Amy's father was William Ashton and her mother was Elizabeth Eddowes.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Eddowes and Martha Jones. She had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Charles, Arthur, Harry and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
