Daniel was born in 1843 in Halliwell.1  Daniel's father was James Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Longworth. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Reuben, Sarah, Susannah and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven known children.
