Reuben was born in 1846 in Halliwell and his baptism took place on June 21st, 1846 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Reuben's father was James Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Longworth. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Daniel, Sarah, Susannah and Mary.  He was the youngest of the seven known children.
