Mary was born in 1839 in Halliwell.1  Mary's father was James Ashcroft and her mother was Mary Longworth. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Daniel, Reuben, Sarah and Susannah.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.
