Sarah's father was Joseph Allen and her mother was Sarah Carter.  Her paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Welsbey. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Benjamin, Benjamin, William, Joseph, George, John, George, Elizabeth and Jane.  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
