George was born in January 1816 in Bolton and his baptism took place on January 14th, 1816 at St. Mary (Deane).1  George's father was Joseph Allen and his mother was Sarah Carter.  His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Welsby. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, Benjamin, William, Joseph, George, John, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.  He was the youngest of the ten children.
