Richard was born in December 1881 in Manchester.¹

Richard's father was James Adderley and his mother was Hannah Eddowes. His maternal grandparents were James Eddowes and Martha Beardow. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, Ernest, Martha, Hannah, Elizabeth and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
