Jan  was born on July 30th, 1860.  Jan 's father was Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and his mother was Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius.  His paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and his paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Dewald, Jacobus, Roelof , Joshua, Erich, Elizabeth, Anna, Martha, Maria and Cornelia.  He died at the age of 90 on August 24th, 1950.
