Sarah was born in 1815.  Sarah's father was Thomas E. Bicknell III and her mother was Mary Nancy Asbill Reeder.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Bicknell and Anne Parks; her maternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Malinda Ross.  She was the oldest of nine children.  She had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas E., William Kelly, Harrison, Sylvester W., Sabinda Taborida, Mahala Jane, Lydia and Melinda Emaline.  She had six half-brothers and ten half-sisters, and also two half-siblings of unknown gender, named Martin, Samuel, Johnathon, Aaron, John, Amos, Malinda, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary Polly, Roda, Barbara, Margarette, Jane, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Child and Child.
