Martin was born in 1783.  Martin's father was Thomas E. Bicknell III and his mother was Mary Mathuson.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Bicknell and Anne Parks.  He was the oldest of fourteen children.  He had two brothers and nine sisters, and also two siblings of unknown gender, named Samuel, Johnathon, Malinda, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary Polly, Roda, Barbara, Margarette, Jane, Charlotte, Child and Child.  He had four half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Thomas E., William Kelly, Harrison, Sylvester W., Sarah, Sabinda Taborida, Mahala Jane, Lydia and Melinda Emaline.
