Jan was born in 1831 in Ambt Doetinchem (Doetinchem).  Jan's father was Willem Jacobsen Jansen and his mother was Hendrika Saalmink / Zaalmink.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Jansen and Johanna Vinkenborg; his maternal grandparents were Gart Jan Zaalmink and Hendrika Wolssinks. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Jacob, Jan, Kindje, Gerritjen and Willemina.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 1 on June 14th, 1832.
