Gerritjen was born on March 25th, 1824 in Ambt Doetinchem (Doetinchem).1  Gerritjen's father was Willem Jacobsen Jansen and her mother was Hendrika Saalmink / Zaalmink.  Her paternal grandparents were Jacobus Jansen and Johanna Vinkenborg; her maternal grandparents were Gart Jan Zaalmink and Hendrika Wolssinks. She had four brothers and a sister, named Jacob, Jan, Jan, Kindje and Willemina.  She was the oldest of the six children.
