Jacob was born on July 20th, 1826 in Ambt Doetinchem (Doetinchem).1  Jacob's father was Willem Jacobsen Jansen and his mother was Hendrika Saalmink / Zaalmink.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Jansen and Johanna Vinkenborg; his maternal grandparents were Gart Jan Zaalmink and Hendrika Wolssinks. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Jan, Jan, Kindje, Gerritjen and Willemina.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
