Jane Oades was born in Plymouth, Devon on 23 Apr 1866. She was the daughter of Richard Worden Oades and Maria Charlotte Langman. She was one of five children but two of these died when very young before Jane was born. Her family lived mostly in the area near St Peters church, Plymouth (In the 1881census they were in No7 Melbourne Cottage. Little is known about her early life. In the 1881 census she was 14 and listed as a scholar and by the 1991 she was married so nothing is known about what job she may have done. Jane married James Hoodless on 25 Dec 1888 and was the motlher of three boys, Charles H.R. (1889) George E. J. N. (1902) Ernest J. (1907). All were baptized at St Peter's Church.  At the latter end of their lives they lived at 7 Well Street  Plymouth.  The house had no electricity so used oil lamps for lighting and there was always the smell of paraffin on entering into the house. They cooked on a kitchen range. They sometimes had dogs and one (called Crib) was often spoken of with great affection by the family
Jane died quite unexpectedley in her sleep 9 Jan 1940 and at 73 had almost no grey hairs amongst the black. She  is buried at Ford Park cemetery, Plymouth.
