General Notes
[blott.ged]
James Hoodless was born in the Camden Town area of London on 23 Apr 1862. The family say that he was always proud that he was born within the sound of Bow bells so was a true Cockney. He was the son of Charles Henry Hoodless and Elizabeth (nee King). Not much is known of his early life in London. He was still with his family in London in the 1881census, living at 47 Howard Road, Hornsey, then aged 18 and employed as a painter but he moved down to Plymouth in Devon and was employed as metal worker and water pipe layer. Whether he moved here for work is not known.
He met Jane Oades and they were married on Christmas Day 1888 at Plymouth. They had three sons, Charles Henry Richard born 22 Nov 1889, George Edward James Northmore born 3 Apr 1902 and Ernest John born 2 Apr 1906. The gap between the first and second child could have been due, so it is said, to James having to work outside of Plymouth occasionally. He is said to have been very strict with his sons and especially would not tolerate lies. He had suffered from a cancer in his throat but it had lain dorment and was not the cause of his death.
He died 22 Jan 1941 and is buried at Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth.
