Richard Worden Oades was baptised at Tamerton Foliot, near Plymouth 18 Sep 1825 (the actual date of his birth is not known). He was the son of George Oades and Alice (nee Worden...hence his middle name). He was the fourth of  six children. Although he was baptised at Tamerton, the family mainly lived at a place called Jump, in the parish of Bickleigh, near Plymouth. Not much is known of his early life except that he became a boot and shoe maker which was a family trade. But he must have joined the Police force at sometime as on the records of two of his children he is listed as 'Police Constable'.  He married Maria Charlotte Langman 25 Apr 1859 at the nearby parish of Buckland Monochorum, which was Maria's home.  The couple moved to Plymouth, living mostly in the area around Wyndham Square,  where they had five children, two of whom died when quite small.  Richard died in the fever hospital 13 Jun 1887 and is buried at Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth.
