Emma was born in 1867 in Landsborough.  Emma's father was Henry James ASTON and her mother was Mary CROWLE. She had six brothers and four sisters, named John, William Henry, Charles, John, Frederick Thomas, Hector Edwin, Elizabeth, Mary Isabella, Lilly Florence and Ethal Florence.  She was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.
