Robert was born about 1860 in Marton, Lancashire, England. Robert's father was Robert Singleton and his mother was Elizabeth Wilkinson. He had a brother and five sisters, named John, Ann, Bridget, Agness, Margaret and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
