Agness was born about 1852 in Marton, Lancashire, England. Agness' father was Robert Singleton and her mother was Elizabeth Wilkinson. She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Ann, Bridget, Margaret and Ellen.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
