John was born about 1854 in Marton, Lancashire, England. John's father was Robert Singleton and his mother was Elizabeth Wilkinson. He had a brother and five sisters, named Robert, Ann, Bridget, Agness, Margaret and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died in 1920.
