Ellen was born about 1859 in Marton, Lancashire, England. Ellen's father was Robert Singleton and her mother was Elizabeth Wilkinson. She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Ann, Bridget, Agness and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
