Ann was born about 1848 in Darwen, Lancashire, England. Ann's father was Robert Singleton and her mother was Elizabeth Wilkinson. She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Bridget, Agness, Margaret and Ellen.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
