Mary was born on March 27th, 1847 in Preesall, Lancashire, England.

Mary's father was John Singleton and her mother was Margaret (Peggy) Seed. Her paternal grandparents were John Singleton and Elizabeth Ion. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, William, James, George, Elizabeth, Jane and Ann. She was the youngest of the eight children.
