William was born on September 6th, 1767 in Kettle, Fife, Scotland. William's father was Robert Myles and his mother was Katherine Beath.  His maternal grandparents were William Beath (younger) and Bethea Balvaird. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Andrew, Bethia, French, Mary and Jean.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
