Mary was born on July 10th, 1774 in Kettle, Fife, Scotland. Mary's father was Robert Myles and her mother was Katherine Beath.  Her maternal grandparents were William Beath (younger) and Bethea Balvaird. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, William, Andrew, Bethia, French and Jean.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
