French was born on July 16th, 1769 in Kettle, Fife, Scotland. French's father was Robert Myles and her mother was Katherine Beath.  Her maternal grandparents were William Beath (younger) and Bethea Balvaird. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, William, Andrew, Bethia, Mary and Jean.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
