Katherine was born on October 12th, 1735 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland. Katherine's father was William Beath (younger) and her mother was Bethea Balvaird.  Her paternal grandparents were David Beath and Elizabeth Black; her maternal grandparents were Unknown Balvaird and Unknown. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Peter, David, Jean and Jean.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
