Peter was born on November 28th, 1739 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland. Peter's father was William Beath (younger) and his mother was Bethea Balvaird.  His paternal grandparents were David Beath and Elizabeth Black; his maternal grandparents were Unknown Balvaird and Unknown. He had a brother and three sisters, named David, Jean, Jean and Katherine.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
