Jean was born on January 19th, 1729 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland. Jean's father was William Beath (younger) and her mother was Bethea Balvaird.  Her paternal grandparents were David Beath and Elizabeth Black; her maternal grandparents were Unknown Balvaird and Unknown. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Peter, David, Jean and Katherine.  She was the oldest of the five children.
