Jean was born on September 27th, 1778 in Kettle, Fife, Scotland. Jean's father was Robert Myles and her mother was Katherine Beath.  Her maternal grandparents were William Beath (younger) and Bethea Balvaird. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Robert, William, Andrew, Bethia, French and Mary.  She was the youngest of the seven children.
