His paternal grandparents were Richard Girdlestone (The Elder) and Palgrave Frith; his maternal grandparents were Charles Ford and Unknown. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Joseph, Henry, Zurishaddai, Dorothy and Sarah. He was the second oldest of the eight children.-
