Ann's father was William Cookson and her mother was Elizabeth Whitfield.  Her paternal grandparents were John Cookson and Jane Pekah; her maternal grandparents were John Whitfield and Margaret Unknown. She had five brothers and five sisters, named William, John, John, Henry, William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane and Sarah.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
