Her paternal grandparents were David Alexander Beath and Marion Johnston. She had six brothers and three sisters, named David Alexander, William Malcolm, Franz Rentiers, James Wiggins, John Hamilton, George Johnstone, Margaret Jane Wiggins, Ada Mary and Penelope Maud.
