John Hamilton was born in 1871 in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. John Hamilton's father was John Johnston Beath and his mother was Rachel Anne Fountain. His paternal grandparents were David Alexander Beath and Marion Johnston. He had five brothers and four sisters, named David Alexander, William Malcolm, Franz Rentiers, James Wiggins, George Johnstone, Margaret Jane Wiggins, Ada Mary, Penelope Maud and Marion Anne Johnston. He was the third youngest of the ten children.-
