George Johnstone was born in 1874 in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. George Johnstone's father was John Johnston Beath and his mother was Rachel Anne Fountain. His paternal grandparents were David Alexander Beath and Marion Johnston. He had five brothers and four sisters, named David Alexander, William Malcolm, Franz Rentiers, James Wiggins, John Hamilton, Margaret Jane Wiggins, Ada Mary, Penelope Maud and Marion Anne Johnston. He was the second youngest of the ten children.-
