William Knowles 
William was born in 1861 in Chester Le St, Co Durham.1 William's father was Robert Knowles and his mother was Jane Pickering. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Knowles and Ann Hope; his maternal grandfather was William Pickering. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Archibald, Robert, Jane, Sarah, Ann, Barbara, Margaret and Mary. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
