Robert was born in 1827 in Chester Le St, Co Durham.¹ Robert's father was Archibald Knowles and his mother was Ann Hope. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Archibald, Peter, William, Thomas, Barbara, Mary, Jane, Margaret and Ann. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 72 in 1899.
